5 tips for decorating your home and office

We all want a nice space to be around. Wether is our own living room, our office or even our bathroom. Wall art can make a huge difference in how we perceive space, and in public circumstances, how people perceive us.

When you come into someone's office, the first impression you get is from how decorated is their working space. Whether is big or small, tidy or messy, and every single detail of the decoration. Furniture, wallpaper, plants, if there's any art on the wall and if it's tasteful...

Nowadays when we're coming back to "normal", we are going to see more of others through how their environment is presented.

1. Color

The first thing to take into consideration for buying art is the color scheme of the space. What colors dominate in the room, are they warm or cool, bright and saturated or mild. Once you know what color is the space you want to decorate you can choose the color of the art.

There are many combinations that you can make, the most simple one is analogous colors. This combination is staying with similar tones, for example a variation of shades of blue. You want to use analogous colors to make your art piece to blend with the space.

Other combination is complementary colors, which is the oposite color in the color wheel from which you take the sample. This combination provides a clear contrast between both to make the art stand out.

You can use any color wheel in the web to select your colors, to make it easy for you we provide you the link to this one.

2. Observing the lines

The second thing we recommend you to take into account is if there are any predominant lines in the space you're trying to decorate. For example, if there are visible columns you might see dominant vertical lines. As well, if there are long furniture around, like tables or shelves, you might see horizontal lines first.

You can also determine lines depending on how much available space you have, for example if the wall you try to decorate is narrow and elongated you might choose vertical lines. On the opposite side, if the wall available is rectangular, a horizontal line scheme might be best.

3. Ideal size of your prints

The size will depend entirely of the space you have available, but a general rule of thumb is that it shouldn't leave too much blank space around it, and of course it shouldn't be bigger. You can work with other elements to fill the space, like plants, shelves, or other photographs or posters, creating a gallery layout like we'll describe in our next section.

4. Gallery wall layout

You can also use several frames and pictures to create a composition on your wall. If you want to use fine art that you already own, or want to fill a big wall, you can create a layout that displays more than one artwork. You can use the same ideas we described before to guide yourself, and go through different layouts depending on how much space and how many photographs you want.

5. Choosing the best frames for your picture

Choosing a good frame is as important as every other step in this list. A frame is complimentary to your art and wall, so you should choose according to both. Use a dominant color of the image, or a complementary one to make it look harmonious. You can also get a mat that separates the image from the frame, making it look more elegant. The colors of the mat and frame can change dramatically how an image is perceived.

You can also opt for a picture that has no frame by using different materials, such as canvas, a metal or wood print, or even acrylic. There are many options for you to get the best combination.
